How much ammo for SHTF prepping?
 

Being new to firearms I am stocking up on ammo each payday buying what I can. I have been trying to figure how much I should try to aim for to have on stock when SHTF. Hard to figure depending on different scenarios. I would rather have plenty in case it becomes more difficult to obtain and yet I've heard conflicting info on how long ammo can be stored for. I have a Makarov and a Sigma 9mm. I suppose if I need I could always use any extra ammo for barter in a SHTF scenario. Any advise greatly appreciated.

Approximately 500 rounds per revolver. 1000 rounds per semi-auto pistol or bolt action rifle. 2000 rounds per semi-auto main battle rifle.

More is better than less. LESS IS BETTER THAN NONE.

You do not mention rifle calibers. I suggest either a shotgun or inexpensive bolt action rifle and ammo to feed it.

How long will ammo keep? I've fired ammo that appears to have been properly stored for AT LEAST fifty years. It worked great.

I've seen ammo loaded less than five years ago, IMPROPERLY STORED, not work worth a diddly.

You've got short distance covered (25 feet or less). You still need to cover intermediate ranges (out to 200 yards) and long ranges (past 200 yards).

I'm buying ammo more as an investment now than anything else...lol. Ammo prices just keep going up.

Properly stored modern ammo will last decades. Best to store it in military ammo cans with good gaskets and store it in a cool dry place. I like to throw in a packet of moisture absorbant with it also.

The amounts that Wallew posted seem good to me.

The more the better. I don't think you can have TOO much ammo on hand. If nothing else, you can use it to trade for other items. Plus, it just keeps going up in price, so why not. Promethius buys a brick of .22 every time he goes to Wally World. I think that's a GREAT idea!

however much you can CARRY for a three day hike....thats about how far a starving man can walk on an empty stomach. FORGET trying to stay in one spot like your house for too long....when the food runs out,the starving hordes will storm your place ....get out of dodge.

I am no expert, but I think a good bit of advice is to share ammo between guns if you can. i.e. pick one rifle caliber and one pistol caliber and stick with them. You'll have to store a lot less ammo. My personal choices are 9mm and 7.62x39 russian.

If you have 1000 of each, you should be fine although more is better if you can do it.

This reminds me of a guy that told me he only needed his guns because he would use them to get everything else he would need.

I told him he has an estimated life span of about 1 month after SHTF.

Have enough guns and ammo to outfit 6-12 other people.

Bolt rifles, AK's etc...with several thousand rounds each.

When the fedstapo come for you, have enough to make Fallujah look like Chucky Cheese!:wink:

Rough guestimate.....

1 year = 6 turkeys, 3 deer, 50 misc. critters = 53 .22cal long and 6 shotgun.

We'll also add 6 shotgun shells and 25 .22cal for predators/pests.

Thats a subtotal of 73 .22cal longs and 12 shotgun shells.

Multiply by 35 years = 2555 .22 cal
420 shotgun shells

Multiply by bad judgment(error) factor of .5= 3832.5 (.22cal)
630 (shotgun)

Estimated cost $450.00

Short answer......not much. And this is for complete sustinance. If I have to start playing commando, I will go find a place that I don't. If I can't do that it is already too late I'm afraid.

FWIW Some ammo takes to poor storage better than others. Shotshells and .22lr needs to be stored in an air tight container. It's a lot easier for air to penetrate the shell/casing and break down the powder. Most milsurp ammo is sealed with a lacquer at the primer and bullet, which is why the old 1940's 8mm that was exposed to the air for 60+ years still functions.

I put everything in 50 or 30 cal ammo cans. In there they'll be viable rounds for my grandchildren to use.

Yes I do :wink: Actually the past several trips I've been getting two of the federal bulk packs.. it's still 2 bucks cheaper per pack than remington and winchester (I don't like winchester .22lr at all, it's crap).

You laugh.....but that is the honest truth ......I tell people the only thing that will be more valuable that gold and silver ...will be BRASS AND LEAD!!

With the hyperinfaltion and assualt on our rights to protect ourselves ammo prices across the board are gonna skyrocket 22-66% THIS YEAR.


And this is BEFORE they ram the microstamping bill down our throats

It the coming years I can see the day when 2 high cap mags and 4 boxes of hollowpoint ammo WILL BE TRADED FOR ACRES OF PRIME LAND.


That is how valuable this stuff will become ...... seriously.



Make sure you get ammo cans and picking up a box a week is the best strategy over the long run .....It you commit to this plan you will be amazed at how much you when the time comes when you cant find it ...you will be heads and shoulders above the rest.

I guess another factor is your age, and whether you are willing to get up and leave if the time comes. I'm not old by any means,but unless someone I know has a retreat in a better location, I will be making my stand right here. My Buddy Irish Gold used to state that on a regular basis. I'll be 50 in three years, so I may be 60 if and when TSHTF. By then I'm sure I'm gonna be pretty set with where I am and things. I'll turn my place into another Waco before I give it up to anyone! And I guarantee I'll take out 3 or 4 or more of them before they get me. I think that's the attitude you have to have.

I don't imagins that you'll be eating deer and turkey's during a SHTF scenerio. Long Pork will probably be the order of the day so you'll need more than a .22:s9:

The good news for us all, is that the most important type of ammo, is also the cheapest. Everyone should have a .22 rifle. I think loading up on .22 is something we all should do. It's a good bartering item, good for small edible critters, and with a nice high capacity magazine, a .22 can be extremely lethal. Also, a nice cheap round for regular marksmanship practice. A .22 head shot can really ruin someones day!

I was thinking about this last night.

I hear a lot of people say that you only need a few hundred rounds because by that time you will either have the other person's gun or you will be dead. However, I think this is flawed because most people either won't have any guns (they'll have bats and knives) or will only have a few bullets. You will never find a "cache" of ammo WTSHTF. Besides what you already have, you will probably only find stray bullets in small amounts.

You're going to need a weapon, and thousands of rounds of ammo, for each of your Family members, Friends who come crawling to your door, with their tail between their legs. You can only take in so many, but you better be ready for them to have nothing to contribute. I know people who are used to taking extremely long showers, wasting water, etc. Can you imagine how much fun that is going to be?

Deer and turkey is exactly what I'll be eating during a shtf scenario. What the hell is long pork? I'll be eating the exact same way as I'm eating now. Very little differece.

With the way ammo prices have been going up I've instead gone to practicing distance throwing with cheap guns such as the Sigma (don't take offense I own one as well) and using them as blunt force objects in hand-to-hand.

The most widely prescribed medication in America (10 yrs ago) was Prozac. The #s go up each year. There is great disconnect with reality. Quite true if you live anywhere in the lower 48. The last depression, it took the deer 30 years to recover. I have a small herd of 15-20 hanging around here, that if the balloon were to go up today, I'd put in canning jars starting tomorrow.
